Product Description:

TechTool Pro 4 is the premier diagnostic and repair utility for the Macintosh running Mac OS X. Among the features included in TechTool Pro 4 are S.M.A.R.T. testing to check for impending hard drive failure, email notification if problems are found by the configurable automatic diagnostics routines, optimization/defragmentation, and many other drive and hardware tests to help pinpoint computer problems.

One of the most innovative features of TechTool Pro 4 is the eDrive. An eDrive is a bootable Mac OS X emergency partition containing TechTool Pro. It is created on one of your computer's hard drives without the need to reformat it. If you have problems with your normal startup hard drive volume, you can boot the computer and run TechTool Pro from the eDrive. This allows for recovery and repair without the need to startup from the TechTool Pro CD. This feature is especially useful to notebook users because it negates the need to carry an emergency TechTool Pro CD while traveling. It also eliminates the need for a new CD when the program is updated.

TechTool Pro CommentaryAll Languages Greyed Out - Version: 4.6.2, 10/4/2008 03:25AM PST

Even though I have Read and Write privileges, with v4.6.2, I can no longer uncheck unwanted languages when I do a "Get Info".

Are others experiencing this? Is there a fix?

TechTool Pro CommentaryGeneral fragmentation question - Version: 4.6.2, 9/1/2008 06:18AM PST

johnlove
I have a brand-new iMac G5 with a 500 gig internal hd.

TechTool Pro 4.6.2 reported a severe fragmentation issue after a week of installing some of my old software. So, I cloned the hd .. erased the hd .. and restored (using SuperDuper).

TechTool still reported:

fragmented files = 54
file fragments = 165
disk fragments = 642

immediately after the restore -- total used space = 60 gig out of the over 460 gig available on the 500 gig hard drive.

Will someone please explain what might be happening here? -- other than TechTool Pro 4.6.2 may be reporting invalid data.

John Love

TechTool Pro ReviewAutomation now seems limited - Version: 4.6.2, 8/5/2008 06:32AM PST

Running from the Upgrade DVD, I found that in some areas the automation is limited. I can no longer check multiple volumes in the same pass -- instead I have to check each volume separately.

I've often wished for a better suite of automation features, supporting a user-defined set of tests and parameters without intervention, and this latest glitch leaves me longing for a better tool.
