Perian is indeed a great tool, it just has a setback in this iteration 1.1.1 cause it does not play
mkv files anymore.

Perian Troubleshooting ReportWorkaround For Flaky Installation - Version: 1.1.1, 10/1/2008 10:20PM PST

The method for installing Perian v1.1.1 is flaky.

You are supposed to double-click the Perian.prefpane icon and the QuickTime component is installed as well as the prefpane. Except it was a total failure on my MacBook running 10.4.11 that already had the previous version of Perian installed. The new prefpane refused to run and threw a nonsense error about needing another version of the OS. No, it does not actually. Meanwhile my older version of the Perian QuickTime component remained in place, not removed.

Work around:

1) Manually toss in the trash both the previous Perian.prefPane file (which should be in your user account's Library/PrefPanes/ folder but could be in your root Library folder instead), and the previous Perian QuickTime component (which should be in your root Library/QuickTime folder, but may be in your user account's Library folder).

2) Now do the installation by double-clicking the Perian.prefpane file from the disk image. All will be well.

Perian itself is a great collection. But the embedded installer app needs some work.
