Pixelmator 1.2.2 (Mac OS X)
While I don't like Photoshop's interface and consider it counter intuitive to most Mac drawing tasks (it is a photo editor, not a graphics package), hats off to Pixelmator for providing a near-zero learn time for anyone familiar the Photoshop. At 1/10 the price of Photoshop and easily 10 times faster at startup, Pixelmator is suitable for 80% of what Photoshop does. Most people who think they need Photoshop could do nicely and better with Pixelmator. It is definitely worth a try. I don't use Photoshop at work or at home any longer because of Pixelmator ... and liked this so much that I bought a personal copy instead of asking work to get my Photoshop upgrade. This one is a real gem and I do not hesitate recommending it. [alert admin]

PopCopy 2.3 (Mac OS X)
I know I bought PopCopy but after a system rebuild I cannot find the registration information. Really thought a lot of it and like the product. I emailed the developer to see if we could figure out where the registration was and no reply. Checked the website which was nice and there is no web site any longer. If the product is going to die, then maybe it would be good to provide a free SN for all the parties that find it in its grave. It still works and while there are a couple of bugs, it is one of those "gotta have it" utilities. (sigh) [alert admin]

BetterZip 1.6 (Mac OS X)
This is what Stuffit should be. I rather like this as it has let me so far peer into archive files that Stuffit has never allowed. So instead of paying all that money for the others, this might be the ticket. The interface applies the KISS principle nicely. So far it runs nicely on my system and the 30 day policy is nicely done and unlike others, no AdWare smacking me when I evaluate it. [alert admin]

Snapz Pro X 2.1.1 (Mac OS X)
As a long time fan of this software, it has been a painful road to this point. The copy protection mechanism continues to get in the legitimate user's way. The bugs continue to exist where competing software operates without issue. At points along the way, having Snapz loaded caused significant system performance degradation. While this fairly mainstream software is not dead last in the relatively minor conversion to the intel CPU machine code (that dubious distinction will go to Microsoft), it does get the honor of pulling in second to last. So in its absence, there is command-shift-3 and 4 (option key and space bar are friends) as well as the built in "Grab" utility. They make up for the the majority of what Snapz does. Then, there is Jing which can capture movies and perform minor annotations. Combine these with OmniGraffle which comes on many Apple CPUs and the honest customer obstacles of Snapz's copy protection and bugs hard seem worth the effort. Pretty software, somewhat high priced, overcomplicated copy protection scheme that is very annoying, very likely to not work in Leopard. Not bad but just not good enough to overcome the difficulties it creates. Jing can be found here: http://www.jingproject.com/?CMP=KgoogleJhomeTM [alert admin]

MailTags 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Ok, it is now operating to the point where it does not recognize its own preference file. Every time Mail opens, MailTags wants me to register the software. I successfully do so and we run fine until either MailTags crashes Mail or I quit Mail. Then I must re-register and of course lose all my settings. Ironic that this all started going haywire right after I paid for this thing. Would not at all recommend this version. [alert admin]

MailTags 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Good but having stability problems still
It keeps on crashing Mail. I get the "Mail Unexpectedly Quit" message although Mail stays up. Trying to Quit mail hangs mail. Force quitting Mail and then relaunching will then show the "unregistered" MailTags dialog. Must register the software again. This happens just about every week now and some times several times a day. Worst part, it looses all the settings including the projects, keywords etc. Frustrating. [alert admin]

HandBrake 0.8.5b1 (Mac OS X)
Interface Better, Operation Not ![]()

Have been using HandBrake for some time. The older interface was difficult to manage and not intuitive. New interface is better but still needs a fair amount of work to intuitive and operate in a mac-like fashion. The big rub is that this version frequently produces video that has only the first 1/3 of the movie audio. After that, silence. This is an error in the basic conversion of TVOD to MPEG-4 AVC as the video has already had it's copy protection removed as part of my backup process... already on my hard disk. I just want to keep my video library in iTunes so my AppleTV can play it and my kids don't destroy or lose the dvds. Appreciate the effort, thanks for the hard work. Software still needs some TLC and design changes before it is a true Mac application. [alert admin]

Cisco VPN Client 4.9.01 (0080) (Mac OS X)
I launch and it shows a dialog with: "Error 51: UNable to communicate with the VPN subsystem. Please make sure that you have at least one network interface that is current active and has an IP address and start this application again." (not "network interface" but "network configuration" btw) and the OK quits the application... It started doing this seemingly for no reason after working the day before. Manually removed the software, reinstalled, no difference. Created a separate Network configuration with nothing but the Airport active. No effect. Did this because Cisco fails when "Parallels Host-Guest" network configuration is active. The system clearly has a working network configuration and associated IP address... I am entering this feedback... [alert admin]

Caveat Emptor! avoid Intego virusbarrier
What sort of settings did you use? In particular, what permissions were the issue (where and the disagreement on settings) I have been running it for years without issue. In fact, I commonly forget I am running it.

Connecting to AD via LDAP can be a hairy operation. Recommend first trying no search base but do try your AD login in the msdomain\adusername format with an Auth Type of Simple. Also, suggest using port 3268 (AD proprietary port) as it has been my experience that AD malfunctions on LDAP queries made on standard TCP 389

Does this product protect against PC viruses etc or not?
At a certain point, should not Windows users simply take responsibility for their own problems? While it is impressive when a Mac virus scanner catches Windows viruses that even their Windows counterparts did not catch, is it really necessary? Isn't it really a 'nice to have' function on the Mac? If a Windows user wants to run their vulnerable system open to any passing malware, is it the Mac communities job to…

Update: Noted that the close preferences problem is back. Sometimes when I try to close the preferences with MailTags installed, I cannot until I select the MailTags preference.. then it closes. Completely removed MailTags and Mail.app is rock solid again. Lockups of Mail seemed to coincide with mail sends when online only. *Really* like the software's function. Attaching todo's with a link back to the mail item is hotel sierra. Did not realize…

Search out all folders named SIMBL and delete them. Then reboot. Then install. If you are running Chax, there will be a SIMBL folder in your ~/Library/Application Support/ Make sure you delete that one too!

Since inviting the UNIX croud in, the version numbers have been rather random and in some cases nonsense. Version number elements *never* begin with 0. A version number while under development is the target number and when the version is ratified for release, it stays the same. Build numbers should never be shown to the pubic unless the software is beta. Releasing software as a build number shows that there is…

*Good Companies Respond* Very encouraged by companies that respond to their installed user base. New e-coupon response to issue is both welcome and shows a regard for both the issue and a desire to support the customer. Thank you very much, will be upgrading after all.

I too am looking for a solution for 400,000 + files. Am using Synchronize Pro now but due to how it operates against the disk (reads individual file info blocks one at a time) it has a hard time operating over a WAN connected volume. For us, 400,000 file operation is the evaluation of pass or fail. As we have a large customer who requires significant paperwork for purchases, simply buying this to test…
