Logitech Control Center 2.2.2 (Mac OS X)

No Logitech Device Found

So I just bought a $100 mouse - the MX Revolution - [luckily it didn't actually cost that much, in the end] and the included CD is filled entirely with Windows drivers. Not even a "Mac User? Click here." sort of thing. In *very tiny print* on page 3 of the very minimal 4 language Instruction Fold-Out, is mentioned, "Macintosh users: Download Logitech Control Center software from www.logitech.com/mxrevolution/software and follow the online instructions for installation." Try that and for your trouble get: "Not Found The requested object does not exist on this server. The link you followed is either outdated, inaccurate, or the server has been instructed not to let you have it." I'm really enjoying my Customer Experience so far! Eventually I find the CURRENT link to the software, download it, install, authenticate, restart and what do I get for my trouble? Open Logitech Control Center (all the while, by the way, USING my new Logictech MX Revolution mouse!) and what do I see? "No Logitech Device Found." Well, IDIOT SOFTWARE, it's right here in my hand. What's the problem? As of right now, I don't know. Nice mouse. However, these folks obviously do NOT have a clue about how to build Macintosh software. [alert admin]

RapidWeaver 3.5.1 (Mac OS X)

Upgrade price too high, or...

Either the upgrade price is too high, or the version increment is too small.

1) 50 percent of the base price for a 1/10 version increment upgrade seems FAR too much. If the upgrade from 3.5 to the current version REALLY has that much value in it, at least show your confidence about that by giving it a BIG version number boost. If you don't have the confidence that people will feel this is worthy of being called "Version 4," then also don't expect them to feel that the paid upgrade is worth it.

2) It is OFTEN the custom to give people who recently purchased a piece of software, a free (or at least discounted) upgrade to a major new release. I bought version 3.5 in December 2006, and I will NOT pay half the price over again in May, for a "dot" update. I would be better off waiting until the NEXT version appears, then buying it outright, rather than getting hit every few months with incremental update fees.

By the way, I absolutely HATE the idea of "subscription" software, which is what this is looking like.

Check Template 2.4 (Mac OS X)

Template? Template? Document?

The description reads, in part: "CheckTemplate is a startup add-on that dynamically checks to see that the link between a document and it's template has not been broken." "Document" and "Template" are used in many contexts. The description SHOULD read: "CheckTemplate is a startup add-on that dynamically checks to see that the link between a MICROSOFT WORD document and its template has not been broken." [alert admin]

Adobe Photoshop CS3 10.0 (Mac OS X)

But what's impressive?

By the time this new version of Photoshop ("CS 3") ships, it will have been about TWO YEARS since the last version shipped. We might hope for Great Changes. Sadly though, I see only some tidying up, a bunch of gratuitous interface changes that make Photoshop/Bridge look more like... Aperture? And... what else? Non-destructive filters? Very welcome. This is, however, about 3 years late. What the HECK are you folks doing with your time? TWO YEARS!! Explain it to us. I dare ya. Oh, how I LONG for some competition here. (Yo, Steve! Are you monitoring?) With this release, the Lightrooom/Photoshop/Bridge mix seems even more confusing. Why do we still even HAVE Bridge?? -- other than as a "bridge" between the various Adobe "Creative Suite" products. [A "suite,' by the way, clearly created entirely in the minds of the marketed department?] Personally, as primarily a Photoshop user, I think that Lightroom is looking pretty interesting. But I must say that I NEVER use Bridge to view InDesign or Illustrator files! I was rather hoping that Lightroom would just REPLACE that funky Bridge thing! No luck, apparently. Internal politics are SO much showing through in the Product Deployment Map. It's very sad. Are Bridge, Lightroom and Photoshop nicely integrated? Heck no! They look almost like they were made by different companies! (Hmm) Is anyone in charge here? Is there any over-arching design principles at work? Clearly, "no." In Photoshop, is Transparency yet a Full Citizen? Can I apply a layer effect or filter to TRANSPARENCY? Nope. Can I apply a filter (and especially, a CONDITIONAL -nondestructive- filter) to a LAYER MASK? Nope. Buy, hey, I got a cool black background in my Bridge thingy now. I'm so impressed. Excuse me if I missing either of those feature before Bridge crashed. Let me know... I'd LOVE to see them!! [alert admin]

AKVIS Sketch 2.1 (Mac OS X)

Not very Nuanced

For a $72 product, the examples on the web site don't seem very nuanced. It looks like some mashing around with Photoshop filters and combining them into an action might produce as good a result. The example were so uninspiring that I couldn't even be tempted to download a demo. Sigh. [alert admin]

So what's a better choice nowadays?

I'm a registered owner, but no longer impressed. People: don't just write "this is garbage" or "torrent is better." PLEASE give me (us) the names of some alternatives!! [alert admin]

The HVC Color Composer Professional Plug-in for Photoshop for Mac 1.3.2 (Mac OS X)

HALF the price of Photoshop!

This product looks interesting. But the price is... HALF that of Photoshop!! Good Grief! Who do they think their customers might be? A Graphic Design Professional would probably be able to do what this product does, in their SLEEP. I, who certainly needs some help with color themes and such, am NEVER going to spend this much for the help. I could probably buy 15 books about color theory for the price of this product. Or take two or three courses at my local community college. I've seen a lot of this sort of NUTTY pricing lately. What Universe are these people living in? If it were priced at $35, I might consider it. But at nearly ten times that, it's simply out of the question. Insane! [alert admin]

Apple Aperture 1.1.1 (Mac OS X)

In the Old Days, the concept of Testing . . .

If there's an area where Apple continues to disappoint, it is in the failure to adequately test products before releasing them. Apple certainly has enough money and technical skill to get this right, but still seems to be trying to "save money" by short-changing the testing process. If a company were trying to differentiate itself from the mass of medicore produts out in the market, this would be a poor choice of action. [alert admin]

You must use self-update to get 1.5.2.

The command you probably want to use is sudo port selfupdate. the -v or -d switches (after "port") are optional and specify regular verbose output ("-v") or developer-level verbose output ("-d"). You need to use "sudo," or the command won't be run as the root user and who knows what kind of confusing mess might result! :)

Useful, but could be better?

Since all Little Snitch does is to intercept an attempt by a program to establish an internet connection, there is not yet any information "being transmitted" and therefore no way to display such information.

It might be useful to have this information captured if you allowed the connection to be made. Of course, by then whatever was being sent has been sent. You'd gain info at a loss of security.

Undo now functions beyond the last Save.

Perhaps the orginal poster is thinking that "beyond the last Save" includes closing a file? Instead, I'm guessing it means that the Undo buffer remains intact through a Save. Programs often empty the Undo buffer as part of the Save process. In those programs, if you make a change, Save, then immediately realize you did not want to make that change... too bad: "Undo" is not available.

Wrong link?

I found this helpful, but clicking on "I found this helpful" led me to a page where I could not indicate that I found that helpful. Yah, VT, wacky new design.
