CleanApp 3.0.0b7 (Mac OS X)
I'm wondering what's going on with this app. When the first version 3 beta came out they said it would be finished in March, if I remember correctly. It's now July and it's still in beta, and it still suffers from some serious bugs: The logging daemon still goes nuts on the CPU sometimes (different things set it off) and whenever I delete an app, I get false positives associated with it, usually Apple Address Book preferences and a couple other Apple files. I was a big fan of this app; if it were stable it would be the best uninstaller available, but if the developers don't get this dealt with soon, I'm going to move to something else. [alert admin]

Love Calculator Pro 1.5.0 (Mac OS X)
Astrology is pseudoscientific nonsense, and cannot possibly be used to figure out whether or not two people are compatible. For that matter, neither can any other calculation. Why is this software even posted on a legitimate site like versiontracker? I hope that no one takes this too seriously. [alert admin]

Speedy Mac 2008 (Mac OS X)
I was disappointed by this application's lack of support for different web browsers, in my case OmniWeb, but I was pleased to receive good customer support by email and on the help forums assuring me that support for OmniWeb would be added in the next release. There are dozens of launcher applications out there, but Speedy Mac sets itself apart with its floating bar approach and nice implementation of favourite and recent items as well as quick access to Apple Script tasks. The price is a little high, but not absurd, and they offer student discounts. In the end, it was the strong support that sealed my decision to buy. I don't mind paying the price so long as the developer genuinely cares about its users' needs. [alert admin]

NetNewsWire 3.1.7b1 (Mac OS X)
In response to a recent post: I find NNW useful even though I'm not syncing between multiple devices for the simple reason that it lays out the different feeds and headlines in a manner that is far better and more customizable than typical web browser RSS readers, especially for handling a large number of feeds. It's far easier to browse headlines and summaries and see the number of updates associated with all your feeds in NNW than in Safari, for example. For RSS feeds that provide the whole article in the feed, you can browse the headlines and get the article on the bottom half of the screen rather than just having a huge page in your browser with all the articles. I don't use NNW's built-in browser when I need to open a web page because I hate having to view web pages without ad blocking. It would be nice to have this included, but otherwise I find NNW an excellent application. [alert admin]

OmniWeb 5.7 (Mac OS X)
I love OmniWeb. It's got Safari's best features and a lot more without the need for additional plugins (except 1Password, which I highly recommend). The 5.8 Sneaky Peek build feels great so far. Its WebKit has been updated to match Safari 3.1.1 and it scores the same as Safari on the Acid 3 test. It also feels a little faster to me... [alert admin]

Opera 9.5 (Mac OS X)
I decided to give Opera another spin with this version, not having tried it in a long time, and I can't say I was impressed. The interface is awful and I found some of the browser's features difficult to navigate. There were some things I like, such as the Speed Dial and its high standards compliance, but If you're in the market for a Mac browser with extensive features, I recommend OmniWeb over Opera. It’s not free, but IMO it fills the role of an advanced browser far better. [alert admin]

DragThing 5.9.3 (Mac OS X)
DragThing's author worked quickly to resolve the issues related to the 10.5.3 update. I received excellent support via email, including quick responses, a work-around, and a download of the new version so I could test it. Top-notch support, and a fantastic and very stable application. Highly recommended. [alert admin]

Lotto Sorcerer X 6.17 (Mac OS X)
Even with "advanced statistical analysis," I imagine anyone's chances of winning the lottery are still incredibly small. Thus, this application is likely never going to be of any use to those who purchase it. I’m not going to call the author of this app a fraudster automatically, but I can an issue with software that produces no measurable results. Perhaps the true purpose of this program is simply to provide a false sense of hope to desperate and/or broke individuals ;) [alert admin]

EasyWMV 1.3.2 (Mac OS X)
The alternatives are problematic for this app...
I have absolutely nothing against the functionality of this app—it works well for what it’s supposed to do. The problem is that VisualHub cost only $8 more and does what this does plus a ton more, and there are several free programs that will do everything that Easy WMV does. Really, I just think that the developer should lower the price in order to remain relevant. I wouldn’t pay for this software knowing what the alternatives are. [alert admin]

Time Machine is designed to perform frequent periodic backups—each one containing hard links to the original backup for data that is unchanged, and copying new or changed data—and allow you to browse back in time anywhere from an hour ago on, depending on the size of your external drive. (Although each backup doesn’t recopy the entire hard drive, it allots the full amount of disk space.) I imagine it’s great for people who output a…

Well, if you purchased after October 31, 2007 you get a free upgrade. It worked fine for me. That seems like a reasonable purchase protection plan—almost 6 months, which is better than a lot of vendors offer. So really there’s no need to freak out. If you bought it within the last 6 months you get a free upgrade, and if you didn’t it’s only 10 bucks to upgrade to version 3. The developers have…

Thanks for the workaround. It worked like you said... only thing now is to see if there are any new bugs with this version.

SimplyBurns doesn't encode MPEG-4 video files and burn them to DVD video. It looks great for some of the other stuff you might want to do with Toast, but it doesn't fill that one important function.

I've been using the latest version of PithHelmet up till now with no issues whatsoever, through all the updates to 10.5 and Safari. Make sure that you don't have SIMBL installed in your home Library folder as well (the PithHelmet installer puts it in the root Library folder). PithHelmet stopped loading for me once when I accidentally installed SIMBL again in my home Library folder. Anyone have any idea what this guy is up to now?…

HandBrake is not a DVD ripper. Though it can copy directly from disks, its documentation states that "[i]t does not crack the latest copy protection schemes hatched by the studios. It converts video from DVD (MPEG-2) to MPEG-4." For best results, HandBrake should be fed clean video_ts, ideally from your hard drive. Use Fairmount first to get rid of the copy protection.
